The Woodlands Township Board of Directors recognized more than 200 volunteers at the annual Spirit of Service reception on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, including Volunteer of the Year award for The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch and other Township departments.

Congratulations to this year’s award recipient for The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch – Village of Grogan’s Mill, Grogan’s Point Watch Coordinator Stephen Terni.

In late 2016 through early 2017, the neighborhood of Grogan’s Point experienced several crimes (burglary of habitation). In response to the criminal activity a “Safety Meeting” was hosted by The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch in January of 2017. Over the past years, Program Specialist Doris Provencio-Hopper had attended numerous activities in Grogan’s Point promoting the Neighborhood Watch, but unfortunately there were few who were willing to volunteer and help to rejuvenate the Watch program in their neighborhood. The criminal activity that occurred proved to be a catalyst for one man to step forward, the Neighborhood Watch Volunteer of the Year – Mr. Stephen Terni. Mr. Terni realized that residents, while they felt violated and angry, needed to organize and revitalize the Watch program. In February 2017, Mr. Terni volunteered to assist in promoting The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch and took the lead! Working in tandem with the Program Specialist, Mr. Terni helped in expanding the Neighborhood Watch, from one volunteer to twenty-one active and trained Neighborhood Watch Coordinators. Grogan’s Point is well on their way to 100% Neighborhood Watch coverage! His continued support of The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch programming has kept the movement strong. Through Mr. Terni’s volunteerism, perseverance, continued Safety Meetings and spreading the word, the residents are more determined than ever to do their part in keeping their neighborhood safe.
